beckel, eric bolling, dana perino and greg gutfeld. it's 5:00 in new york city. this is "the five." ♪ ♪ >> kimberly: another death rocks the n.f.l. a week after the belcher murder-suicide. cowboys' defensive lineman josh brent charge charged with intoxication manslaughter after his passenger and teammate jerry brown was killed in a car crash outside of dallas on saturday. police say brent was speeding when the vehicle hit a curb and flipped. he is out of jail now after posting $500,000 bail. >> do you have anything you want to say to jerry brown's family? >> jerry brown is my dear best friend. i'm just trying to deal with his death right now. >> kimberly: i can only imagine. the fact it comes days after kansas city chief jovan belcher killed his girlfriend and then himself. the new video shows cops confronting him before the shooting. belcher was reportedly out drinking that night and brent's arrest is the 15th player arrested for suspicion of dui. it's a problem. what should the n.f.l. do about it? that's the discussion over the weekend. people have strong opinions about this

one of the best things that could happen to the state of michigan and maybe the city of detroit. if you are a car company and want to do business there because the unions are too strong and thes have to be so high and all of the jumping through hoops. maybe now you can. maybe the next car company will go do business there and bring jobs there. >> gretchen: remember back during the bailout, the unions got the good end of the deal in the bailout. it was privately held dealerships that got the rough deal. >> eric: stock holders and bond holders. >> steve: if you were holding gm stock it went to zero. >> gretchen: unions won in that deal. >> eric: uah w took billions up front. stock holders you know you might lose everything. when you buy a bond you are first in line and they wiped out the bond holders. >> gretchen: and for the state of indiana teachers infact. >> brian: gm bond holders got roll add out. capitalism rules and president obama changed going forward. >> steve: if you are a union member your union will go to bat for you and they went to bat at chrysler. do you remember w

. reinventing michigan, let me just zero in on one city in your state, detroit, 18.9% unemployment which is absolutely deplorable for the people of detroit. what do you intend to do or what can you do? what can the state do to try to help the city? one city council men last night said as a quid pro quo she wants the president to bail them out. what do you plan to do about detroit? >> we are going to continue working with the city. we did a consent agreement with them earlier this year that called for a number of actions to happen because we do need better services for the citizens of detroit. they deserve it. and we need to achieve results. the problem is the mayor and the city council haven't been able to get on the same page. we are going through the process now of saying if they don't get it done, we are going to start a review, hopefully next week, that will go on for 30 days to say if it doesn't get done, there are other actions, including emergency managers that we should be considering for detroit. so i'm clearly encouraging the city and the mayor to get these issues on the table,

, wxyt talk radio. okay, doc, as i understand it you tell me if i'm wrong. about 11,000 detroit city workers and mayor bing is cutting 4 to 500. i'm not impressed with that. i think he should be cutting 20% of the workforce, not 5%. >> no, you're absolutely right, larry. the problem is they're still playing catch up. year after year they're like we got to run to catch up with it instead of coming out and getting in front of it. the city has shrunk in population. it makes sense. we have to shrink all those government workers. it's not that we don't want certain services, it's just what you have to do. we do it in our personal life or are supposed to. >> those unions don't want it. we saw the clip when this story first came up that gal on the city council said detroit delivered for barack obama in the election, he should now bring home the bacon for detroit. the unions don't want it. the media don't want it. i'm not sure if dave bing who was a great basketball player, maybe not such a hot mayor. this thing has to go under a financial control board, doc. you know that. they're incapable

facility, which means that the veterans hospital was one of four hospitals in the city that had to close down entirely. and that has meant that emergency rooms and other facilities in the remaining still open hospitals in the city have been overwhelmed with a big increase in patients. the whole thing was and is a mess. well, when we reported on that dire situation at the veterans hospital a few weeks ago, the most dire part of it was the prospect that it would never reopen. they were not even making estimates of when it might open again, if ever, which is a daunting thing for the largest city in the country which has a huge concentration of veterans. but as i said, this is the good news part of it. and there is some good news here. after refusing to initially say if that hospital was ever going to come back, the v.a. has finally announced a reopen date for that hospital. they say they will reopen the outpatient clinic, at least at the manhattan v.a. hospital in march. there is no word yet on when the in-patient facility will be open. but you know what? for a place that we didn't know was
